Where can I buy JB Kind Doors?

Our doors are available throughout the UK via a network of over 1,000 Builders Merchants and Door Retailers, as well our approved Online Partners.  For details of your local JB Kind supplier use our helpful Supplier Locator or if you wish to buy online, try our Online Partners.

What type of treatment should I use on my door?

The choice of door treatment depends on the ultimate finish that you are seeking. There are many different types of varnish or paint available which are suitable for use.

We do not have a preference towards any particular manufacturer or brand of door treatment. However, we strongly advise using solvent based products which provide a full and complete seal. The use of water based treatments should be avoided. If in doubt, please call us for advice on 01283 554197.

Can I use an external door internally?

It is not advised for external timber doors to be used inside a building. External doors are manufactured using timber which has a higher moisture content than that used internally. Exposing quality external doors to arid centrally heated conditions risks them becoming warped or deformed. They also tend to be thicker than internal doors so may not fit a standard internal door frame.

How are JB Kind Doors constructed?

An assortment of materials and construction methods are utilised throughout our door ranges. All materials used in JB Kind door construction are wood based but most are commonly ‘engineered’. This means that the materials have been made from different raw timbers to form composite timber components.

High density chipboard, block timber, laminates and fibreboards are all commonly used within our doors. In general, this means that the raw material is managed more efficiently to produce better stability and affordability.

Can JB Kind Doors be modified?

Yes, within reason. We try to provide reasonable tolerances to enable doors to be resized to suit individual frames. However, should radical resizing be required, we suggest you consult us as the long-term stability of your door might be compromised if it has been altered inappropriately. Several of our door ranges are available with a bespoke size option. We also provide a made to measure internal doors service.

Can I see your fire door assessments?

Yes, of course. We are more than happy to supply the fire door assessment that is relevant to your individual requirements. Please call us on 01283 554197 or complete our online contact us form with details of your enquiry.

How do I measure up for a door?

We have all the instructions to measure up for a new door in a step by step guide on our website how to measure for a new door.

How do I fit a door?

Fitting a door is more complicated than it sounds and we would always advise asking a trained professional to do it. It’s a skilled trade and there are qualified people who can make sure your doors are perfectly hung. For more information on how to install a door click here for fitting instructions.

Do I need to buy door handles and hinges?

Yes you do. JB Kind Doors are not sold with handles, hinges, latches or locks (often known as door furniture or ironmongery) so don’t forget to choose these vital parts or you won’t be able to hang your door or open it.  To see the styles available, view our Door Furniture.

Can I get a stylish fire door for my home?

Absolutely! There’s a common misconception that a fire door means one of those green doors with a bar to push to let you out. This does not need to be the case in your home. Fire doors are available within virtually every JB Kind door range and you can even have a fire door that is glazed.

Internal fire resistant doors are commonly known as FD30, which mean that they are fire doors that are tested to last 30 minutes against the heat and flames. If you are looking to purchase a fire door then you need to make sure that it’s up to scratch.

It’s important that if you are buying a fire door, that you get it fitted by a qualified professional. If you’d don’t, you risk the fire door not performing properly.

For more information visit the Fire Doors section on our website.

How do I find out if my door is environmentally friendly?

We are proud to tell you that all JB Kind Doors are sourced from sustainable sources.

Wood is one of the world’s few renewable resources so making the decision to buy a wooden door, as long as it’s from a sustainable source, is a responsible one.

Apart from being from a sustainable source, there are also additional guarantees that you can look for – for example, a door which is FSC® certified. [FSC certification is the mark of responsible forestry which is awarded by the Forestry Stewardship Council].

Over 50% of JB Kind Doors are FSC certified. For more information click here FSC door supplier.

What are door ‘finishes’ and which one is right for me?

The finish of a door refers to the door’s surface and there are three types that you can consider: pre-finished, unfinished and primed.

pre-finished door will be ready to fit complete with either a varnish or paint finish. If you are considering a wooden door there really is a wealth of options available to you, due to the variety of veneers. Oak, Walnut, Ash and Beech are just a few examples or you could opt for a contemporary painted finish.

primed finish is where a door has been prepared with an undercoat ready for a top coat finish of your choice. It may be that you’re keen to apply your own finish to tailor your door to your design theme.

Unfinished doors are prepared ready for your choice of paint or varnish. One of the rewards for your labour will be that your door can match your colour scheme. Just remember that you’ll need to budget for the purchase of your chosen paint and varnish.

I don’t understand a door-related term. How can I find out what it means?

You should be able to find the answer in our online glossary. If you can’t find it then please don’t hesitate to contact us on 01283 554197 or info@jbkind.com with your question.

What is the thickness of the veneer used on your internal doors?

At JB Kind, our internal doors have a veneer thickness of between 0.5mm and 0.6mm, depending on which of our doors it is. If you’d like a measurement for a specific door from one of the JB Kind ranges, then don’t hesitate to contact our Sales Team on 01283 554197 who will check with one of our technical specialists.

How much can a door be reduced by?

As the construction of each door design will vary, it very much depends on the specific door. There are also special rules and regulations relating to the modification of Fire Doors, as the type of certification a fire door has dictates what changes can be made to the door. Contact our Sales Team on 01283 554197 if you’d like guidance on specific door ranges and models.

Can you give out glass / glazed panel sizes?

If you’d like to compare the size of the glazed panel from one JB Kind door to another then, whilst we don’t list the dimensions in our brochure, we would be delighted to provide these details to you to help you make your decision on which door(s) will work best for you. Contact our Sales Team on 01283 554197 for more information.

Which side is the lock block on?

A lock block is the part of the door that the lock will be built into. In our standard core doors with a cellular structure, the lock block will be an additional solid piece of wood that you may find on one or both sides of the door, depending on the specific door design.

To identify where the local block is / lock blocks are, just take a look at the top or bottom of the door and there will be either a key/keyhole illustration or the word ‘Lock’ printed on the relevant side.

Are your doors available in unusual sizes?

At JB Kind we can make special sized doors to order for a number of our ranges.  Visit our made to measure internal doors section for more details or give our Sales Team a call on 01283 554197.

Can your internal doors be made into a pair / rebated?

Taking two of our internal doors and making them into a pair is possible with all of our internal doors. When fitting doors into pairs, to enable then to open and close, there will need to be a small gap between them, enabling the doors to close together neatly. Rebating is the task that eliminates this small gap by removing a section of each door along opposite sides of the meeting edges, so that the doors interlock with each other when they are in the closed position.

Rebating is a technique that requires skill and experience, which is why we would suggest that you source professional support. At JB Kind we offer a rebating service and advise that you check whether your preferred doors are suitable.

Pair maker mouldings are available as an accessory to form pairs for most of our doors. A pair maker is a t-shaped moulding that is fitted to the edge of one door to form a rebated edge.
